Whitchurch Community Water Vole Project

The project began in 2006 with the acquisition by the Whitchurch branch of Shropshire Wildlife Trust of an “Awards for All” grant from the Big Lottery. It’s  aims included raising awareness, involving the community, surveying and improving habitat. Like many such initiatives it gathered momentum and developed in directions not anticipated in the original concept. What was planned originally to be a 12 month project is still in being 7 years later!

Members of the group have been involved in

  • Radio broadcasts both local and national
  • A national TV programme in the “Nature of Britain” series
  • Acting as a case study of a volunteer-led project for a PhD at Aberdeen University
  • Giving talks to a wide variety of audiences
  • Running training courses and workshops
  • Working locally with statutory bodies including the Environment Agency, Natural England and Shropshire Council
  • Working with the Meres and Mosses Landscape Partnership Scheme
